Corner Brook Triathlon

25th Annual Corner Brook Triathlon
(Sunday, July 23)

What began with just a dozen hardy competitors in 1982 has evolved throughout the past 25 years to become a premier international celebration of triathlon and multi-sport. Each year, hundreds of participants gather in Corner Brook to swim, cycle and run their way through our picturesque city. One of the longest running triathlon events around the globe, Corner Brook has been touted as “the toughest course in the world,” attracting elite and age group athletes year after year to tackle our infamous hills in an attempt to conquer The Rock.

The Corner Brook Triathlon has a number of different categories for all athletes. Everyone is encouraged to come out and give some version of the sport a try! Disciplines include:

Olympic Distance Triathlon Event

Age Group athletes participating in this discipline will complete 3 laps around the Glynmill Inn Pond for a total of 1.5km, before heading up a carpeted trail to the Transition Area to begin the cycle portion of the race.

The cycle route consists of 4 laps on a closed course (total of 40km), with each lap containing one major climb. The road surface is well-maintained, paved asphalt, and athletes will pass Transition Area twice on each lap. The cycle course has one aid station, which athletes will pass on each lap.

Once athletes have completed the cycle route, they will head out for 4 laps of the run course (total of 10km) before crossing the finish line. This undulating course has a paved asphalt surface with a short section of gravel trail, and 3 aid stations are provided. Athletes will pass Transition Area on each lap.

This event is a Triathlon Canada Age Group qualifying race for the 2006 and 2007 Triathlon World Championships. One qualifying spot is available in each age group, male and female.

Sprint, Super-Sprint and Team Triathlon Event

Taking place on the same course as the Olympic distance triathlon, these disciplines offer events of alternative distances for athletes to participate in.

Sprint and Team competitors will complete 1 lap of the swim course (0.5km), 2 laps of the cycle course (20 km), and 2 laps of the run course (5 km). Teams must consist of 3 athletes, each of whom will complete 1 of the disciplines.

Super-Sprint competitors will complete 1 lap each of the swim (0.5 km), cycle (10 km), and run (2.5 km) courses.

Duathlon and Sprint Duathlon
(Saturday, July 29)

Not a swimmer? The Duathlon and Sprint Duathlon offer disciplines for land lovers. Competing on the same course as triathletes, the Duathlon begins at the Transition Area. Duathletes will compete an initial 4 laps (10 km) of the run course, followed by 4 laps (40 km) of the cycle course, and rounded out with a final 2 laps (5 km) of the run.

Sprint Duathletes will compete half this distance: 2 laps of the run course (5 km), 2 laps of the cycle (20 km) and 1 final run lap (2.5 km).
