ITU Duathlon World Championship
Duathletes begin their race from the start line on O’Connell Drive, near Transition Area. Athletes will immediately descend into Margaret Bowater Park and then climb toward a 2-way water stop before making a right turn onto Elswick Road. Continuing about 2/3 of the way up Elswick Road, runners then make a 180 degree turn around a giant pylon and retrace their steps. After crossing over the bridge in Margaret Bowater Park, athletes will veer to the right onto an unpaved gravel trail and will run toward Transition Area, past a third water station before beginning the next lap. Duathletes will complete an opening 4 laps of the run course before heading into Transition to begin the cycle portion of their event.
After finishing their first run leg, duathletes will complete T1 and exit Transition via the left-hand lane of the access road behind Sir Richard Squires Building. Turning left onto Mount Bernard Avenue, athletes will proceed toward a set of traffic lights at the intersection of O'Connell Drive and Mount Bernard Avenue. While Age Group athletes will turn around under these lights, Elite athletes will continue to climb up University Drive and turn around in front of the Arts and Culture Centre. After completing the bike turnaround, athletes will cycle down Mount Bernard Avenue in the left-hand lane and will ride past City Hall, sweeping left onto Herald Avenue. Cyclists will make a quick right turn between Fortis Tower and the Millbrook Mall, heading toward Griffin Drive. Athletes continue out Griffin Drive to a second turnaround (the Age Group turn is located further out than the Elite turn), and then retrace the route, climbing up Mount Bernard Avenue toward the Transition Area. Elite duathletes will complete 6 laps of the cycle route, while Age Group athletes will complete 4 laps.
Once athletes have completed the cycle route, the will enter T2 using the same access road behind Sir Richard Squires Building, keeping to the left-hand lane. Athletes will leave Transition and complete a final 2 laps of the run course, finally proceeding to the finish line located in the upper Sir Richard Squire Building Parking lot.
